I lived in Hamburg for a year or so and used to see small, brass, plates set into the
pavements in various streets. I assumed that they were access points for services to
the houses. Then one day I had a closer look.
I saw that the plates were in fact memorials to the people who had lived in the house
Once you begin to notice them, you realise that they are everywhere. Each one
telling its own story of despair - families, neighbours, a woman aged 84 ...

After starting my project of The 99 Names, I discovered that the brass plates were called
Stolpersteine and are an art project by the German artist Gunter Demning. He has laid many
thousands of Stolpersteine throughout Germany - almost 3,000 in Hamburg alone. You can
